Indian supplier industry needs an awakening
- By:Deepesh Rathore
The Indian supplier community presents an interesting paradox in the types of people running the show. On one end are people like the Kalyani-Bharat Forge Group, the TVS Group and maybe TACO who are very open about their company and capabilities while the other side is dominated by small manufacturers who still believe that email is not worth their precious time. So it was no surprise to me when I came across this situation last week.
Apparently a leading supplier of brake shoes having a plant near Delhi called in their unit head and told him, quite coolly, "Now that the plant is running profitably, why should we pay you the high salary that you have been getting?"
Needless to say, the poor guy is busy looking for jobs and has gone on extended leave.
If this is the attitude of the supplier industry then will they be able to attract good talent to take them to global leadership?
And the presence of Indian suppliers at international trade conferences and seminars is dismally low. I wish the Indian suppliers will stop playing toddlers with ACMA holding their hand in getting international exposure and take the initiative themselves.
